Election Sparks Protests

Sunday’s elections in Moldova saw the ruling Communist Party, headed by the President, Vladimir Voronin, win by a landslide victory. This has led to violent protests by the Opposition. To counter the charges, the President has requested a recount of the votes cast. The Court Chairman, Dumitru Pulbere has postponed the recount citing non availability of documents from the Central Election Commission. This is the first time since Moldova’s independence in 1991, that election recount is being considered. There are nine judges in the court, out of which eight were appointed by Voronin. Hence it is likely that his request would be considered favourably. Election Officials have been quoted as stating that the Communist Party has won 50% of the votes.

Protests Against The President

Protests rocked the Georgian capital for the third day. Protestors were demanding the resignation of Georgia’s President, Mr.Mikheil Saakashvili. Georgia, which became independent after that fall of the Soviet Union, has witnessed partisan politics since then. Opposition is still not strong enough and the number of protestors seemed to be dwindling on Saturday. There was a break in the demonstrations on Sunday, as it was the week before Easter. The Opposition blames the President for Georgia’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Russia last August. Mr.Saakashvili on his part has maintained that the protests show that Georgia’s democracy is flourishing and has refused to step down, calling for talks instead.
