Ensure safety

Even as Sri Lanka was into the final phase of its battle to end its 25 year conflict with the rebel Tamils, there was widespread concern about the safety of over civilians caught in the war zone. There was mounting pressure on the island country to ensure the safety of these civilians. The UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes hoped that the Sri Lankan government would respect the heavy weapons pledge and stop the use heavy weapons. He said that an estimated 50,000 Tamil civilians were trapped. The UN which has already given $10 million as aid has further in addition pledged another $10 million.
