Election Sparks Protests
by admin on Jul.28, 2010, under Election
Sunday’s elections in Moldova saw the ruling Communist Party, headed by the President, Vladimir Voronin, win by a landslide victory. This has led to violent protests by the Opposition. To counter the charges, the President has requested a recount of the votes cast. The Court Chairman, Dumitru Pulbere has postponed the recount citing non availability of documents from the Central Election Commission. This is the first time since Moldova’s independence in 1991, that election recount is being considered. There are nine judges in the court, out of which eight were appointed by Voronin. Hence it is likely that his request would be considered favourably. Election Officials have been quoted as stating that the Communist Party has won 50% of the votes.
